Severe Weather

In the event of severe weather affecting the island, we will assess the risks to children and young people travelling to and from school, and their attendance at any school sites badly affected by the conditions.

Specific announcements will be made by BBC Radio Guernsey & Island FM on our behalf with either all schools open, named schools closed, or all schools closed. Information will also be given concerning school transport.

When severe weather occurs overnight, these announcements will be made at half-hourly intervals starting at 7.15am or earlier if possible.

When severe weather conditions arise during the school day, announcements will be made as soon as decisions are taken and regularly thereafter.

Information about any school closures will also be posted on this website.

It is expected that parents use their discretion to keep a child at home if they believe that conditions are such as to make it unreasonable or unsafe for their child to attempt to reach school.

Schools should remain open in severe weather conditions unless:

            a) Travel to and from the site is impracticable and/or too hazardous and advised as such by the Police.

            b) The school buildings are unusable through damage to, or failure of, essential on-site heating and sanitation services or;

            c) The number of staff able to reach a particular school is inadequate to run it, even on an emergency basis with severely restricted curriculum delivery.
