 | Elected as a people’s deputy for St Peter Port North in April 2008 I am the oldest serving States member. I sit on the Education Department, the Social Security Department and the Public Sector Remuneration Committee.I am a Nuclear Physicist by profession having worked in England and then at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland for ten years. I came to the Island with my Guernsey wife in 1982 and have had extensive business experience running two companies during my time on the Island. I retired as director of the Chamber of Commerce in Nov 2007 and threw myself into the task of becoming a deputy. This has been a steep learning curve but I trust my previous experience of States departments has allowed me to become a useful communicating deputy. With my previous computer experience I am involved with the GILE (Guernsey Integrated Learning Environment) project which will be replacing existing equipment with up-to-date computers during 2009. The modern education of our young people to the highest standards will provide a work force able to face the changing needs of the Island’s economy. I am a member of seven school management committees and am aware of a range of school issues. With a relatively fixed budget and a significant drop in school numbers, the Education Department is having to make some difficult decisions, yet is trying to introduce universal nursery education as well as funding and developing Les Beaucamps and La Mare de Carteret schools as quickly as possible. In my spare time I am a beekeeper, bell-ringer and sing in St Martin’s church choir. | | | |
