Selection at 11 (the 11+ process)

Pupils at States-maintained primary schools undergo a selection process (the 11+) in the final year of primary education to decide on their secondary phase place.

The majority of children will be awarded places at the high school which serves their catchment area. Around a quarter of all children who are assessed as being of high academic ability and aptitude will be considered for a place at either the Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre or, as special place holders, one of the three Colleges (Ladies' College, Blanchelande College or Elizabeth College).

Pupils attending the two Roman Catholic Primary Schools also sit the 11+ to decide on their secondary phase place (there is no Roman Catholic secondary school under the control of the Education Department).

Primary Schools work closely with the High Schools and Grammar School to ensure that all pupils are well prepared for the transition to a new school.

The Education Department produces a Guide for Parents of pupils in Year 6 which gives detailed information about the selection process. This Guide can be downloaded below.

The Education Department can now confirm that this year's 11+ results will be delivered, as usual, on Saturday 26th May.
