Communication & Autism Support Service
The Communication & Autism Support Service is another education support service working with children and young people in mainstream and special schools.
The Service provides:
- advice and consultancy to teachers, support staff and parents for children from pre-school to age 19 who have significant difficulties with social communication and language, including autism
- advice to schools on the adaptation of material, teaching methodologies and strategies, examination arrangements etc
- school staff development and training in relation to social communication and language difficulties and autism
- advice to schools in identifying and assessing pupils' social communication and language needs
- assessment of pupils who may have social communication and language needs
- support for pupils with social communication and language needs in mainstream schools
- assistance in writing Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
- specific training pertinent to individual pupils e.g. Social Use of Language Programmes (SULP)
- management and support of the Communication Bases within mainstream schools (at Amherst Primary and St. Sampson's High Schools)
Entry Criteria to the Service
- Significant difficulties with social interaction and communication, despite receiving differentiated learning opportunities over a period of time
- Significant difficulties in the understanding or use of language which affects progress in school. It is expected that these pupils are also referred to the Speech and Language Therapy Service and the Communication and Autism Service would liaise with the child's speech therapist.
- Diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder
The Communication and Autism Support Service Team
The team consists of:
- 3 specialist advisory teachers
- 3 Communication Base teachers
- 16 teaching assistants (full-time and part-time)
The team works together with:
- Health & Social Services Department including;
- Speech and Language Therapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Physiotherapists
- Autistic Spectrum Disorder Assessment Team (ASDAT)
- Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS)
- National Autistic Society
- Communicate Guernsey
- Pre-schools
