The Link Centre (to be re-designated Les Voies School from Sep 2013)

The Link Centre's prime role is that of a specialist centre to support pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD), their schools and families.

The Centre was established in November 2009 on the site of the former Oakvale School following the move from the SEBD Centre's former premises at Granville House in Mount Durand.

The Link Centre caters for a maximum of 56 full time places for pupils between the ages of 5 and 16. The Centre is not a school and pupils who attend will remain on the register of their mainstream school. The majority of pupils will attend on a time-limited part time basis, sometimes just for a couple of hours a week. The expectation is that pupils will return to their school, if not full-time then at least part-time.

Pupils with SEBD cover the full range of ability and continuum of severity. Their behaviours present a barrier to learning and persist despite the implementation of effective school behaviour policy and personal and social curriculum.

Some pupils may display signs of low self-esteem, underachievement and inappropriate social interaction. These pupils may be quiet, withdrawn or isolated and find it difficult to communicate.

Others may have poor concentration, a short attention span or find it hard to cope in a group or with unstructured time. Some pupils may display signs of inappropriate social interaction, provoke, confront or have emotional outbursts.

The Centre also provides a base for the School Liaison Team which provides advice, support and intervention to mainstream schools and advice and support to staff in special schools for students with SEBD need.

A small proportion of students attending the Link Centre are there because they have been excluded from school. This number will vary on a daily basis. When a pupil is excluded from school on a Category 2 exclusion (from 5 to 20 days), full time education is provided at the Link Centre from the 6th day of the exclusion until they go back to school.

The Centre is open between 8am and 4pm with pupils attending between 9am and 3pm.

NB: From September 2013 the Link Centre will become Les Voies School, a special school for learners aged between 4 and 16 with significant social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
