Applying for a school place
All children who reach the age of 5 before 1st September in a particular year are required, by law, to attend school for the next academic year onwards. The Education Department has also agreed that children who reach the age of 4 on or before 31st August may also start school from the beginning of the academic year in September, but only if spaces and staff are available at the school.
Children will normally attend the school in the catchment area in which the parent or carer lives. Further information about catchment areas is available on the Catchment Areas page.
A copy of the full School Admissions Policy is available to download from this page.
PLEASE NOTE THE CLOSING DATE TO REGISTER YOUR CHILD FOR SEPTEMBER 2013 IS FRIDAY 15 FEBRUARY
Admission to a States Primary School or Voluntary School
You will need to register your child for admission to your catchment school by the February half-term in the year your child would be due to start school. (e.g. February 2013 for September 2013 start). If your child is a baptised Catholic you may choose to register him/her at one of the two Catholic primary schools (known as Voluntary Schools) - Notre Dame du Rosaire Primary or St Mary & St Michael Primary.
You register by completing a form available from your catchment school. You should return the completed form to your school accompanied by a photocopied proof of address (e.g. utilities bill, driving licence). Parents should note that the Education Department has overall responsibility for confirming a school place.
You will be informed of your child's allocated primary school by the Friday of the week before the end of the Spring Term.
Pupils may be registered after the closing date for registrations, but cannot be assured of being allocated a place in their catchment school.
Parents who wish to register a school-age child during the course of the school year should complete the form from the catchment school. If space is available in the child's school year group, registration will be automatically approved. If space is not available, the Education Department will allocate a place at the nearest available school.
Admission to a States High School, the Grammar School or the Colleges
The school your child will attend for the secondary phase of education is governed by a selection process at the age of 11 (the 11+)
A Guide to Parents of Year 6 pupils about the selection process and allocation of places is available to download below.
